How to Find Your Event Style?
“Style” is defined as a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles on which something is designed. In event planning, styling allows you to infuse your personal aesthetic, personality, tastes and perception, with interior design to create an experience for guests.
But what if you can’t identify your style? This could be puzzling if you never took time to explore your personal preferences. The good news is discovering your style is achievable by identifying a few key details.
Seek Inspiration
Have you ever found yourself actively seeking something new? Without realizing it, you were subconsciously looking for inspiration. This is common and an important part of the process. The tricky thing about inspiration is it doesn’t have a set timeline. It strikes at any moment, or not at all if you are trying too hard to force it. If you are feeling stuck, sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes to change your mindset.
Take a step back, move away from your screens and do something you enjoy that removes you from your daily distractions. Inspiration could be found all around you, in nature or through design books. Allow yourself to explore freely, without pressure. Inspiration can come from unexpected sources, by staying open minded, you will begin to discover your vision to take shape.
Consider Your Color Palette
Have you ever noticed how certain colors can immediately affect your mood? This is the power of color in design! Colors do more than just look appealing; they can convey emotions, create memories and reflect cultures.
When deciding on a color palette, think about the emotions you want to evoke. There is a direct connection between colors and philosophy. Your color choices should complement the overall aesthetic you want to achieve for the event.
Start by thinking of a few words for the mood and vibe you are going for. Once you have these words, define what each one means to you. For example, light shades of blues, greens and neutrals are typically related to calm and relaxing; while bold hues of red, yellow or orange are often associated with lively, fun and energetic.
Once you’ve defined the atmosphere you’re aiming for, choose colors that align with those meanings. This approach will help create a cohesive and intentional color palette that will enhance the experience for your guests.
Review Design Periods
After you’ve established your core words and color palette, the next step is to explore various design periods. Each era has its own distinctive identity, with unique characteristics and elements that define its style.
Use your chosen colors as a guide to narrow down the design periods. For example, Art Deco is known for bold geometric shapes, metallic accent, opulence, and sleek modern designs with vintage inspired notes. If a more minimalist approach is of interest, Mid-Century Modern focuses on sleek lines and functional beauty, and on natural material and open airy designs.
There is a vast range of style periods to draw references, from Bohemian to Scandinavian design. The goal is to identify elements that resonate with you and incorporate them. This will help you to create a one of a kind event that feels timeless and personal.
Put It All Together
Remember, there is always room for evolution as you combine different elements of inspiration, color and design periods. Once you have the basics of what you like, you can begin to gradually bring your theme to life. Your style may not make sense to others, and that is okay. The most important thing is staying true to your vision, that is all that matters!
